Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

This collection includes text, images, spreadsheets, GIS data and site records from an archaeological evaluation carried out by Connect Archaeology on land at Fosse Way, Offchurch, Warwickshire between April and May 2018.

Project Summary

The trial trenching was required to help identify the location, extent, survival and significance of known and potential heritage assets which may be affected by the proposed scheme. The objective of the investigation was to gain information about the archaeological potential of the Site to contribute to Specific Objectives set out in the Generic Written Scheme of Investigation:

  • The Romano-British period saw the beginning of a more established infrastructure network. Can we investigate the development of these routes, trackways and roads and the influence they had on landscape change?
  • Assess the evidence for regional and cultural distinctiveness along the length of the route in the Romano-British period, with particular regard to the different settlement types encountered along the route;
  • Identify evidence for late Roman occupation and attempt to identify any continuity in settlement patterns between the end of the Romano-British period and the Early Medieval period;
  • Identify the location of Middle to Late Saxon settlement, explore processes of settlement nucleation and understand the development of associated field types and agricultural regimes.

Re-Use Value Statement

No archaeological remains of significance were present in the trenches. The only features encountered were the remains of a furrow [1007] and an indeterminate ditch or pit feature thought to relate to the post-medieval agricultural use of the land. Multiple land drains were also recorded across the Site.

The evaluation met its primary objective, which was to determine, as far as reasonably possible, the nature of the archaeological resource within the Site. Despite the broad spatial coverage of the evaluation, as no significant archaeological features were present within the trial trenches, it is considered that any further work would only have a very low potential to reveal archaeological remains within this Site; a lack of finds supports this interpretation. There are no results of consequence which contribute to the wider historical context of the area. Due to the lack of archaeological features present at this Site there will be no recommendation for formal publication of the results.
