Geophysical survey near Kings Bromley (Staffordshire) highlighting a possible small henge

A body of historic environment work was undertaken for the now cancelled Phase 2 of HS2. The archive of that work provides a range of information, including the environmental impact assessments and results of geophysical survey.

The Phase 2a route was intended to extend north-west from Lichfield to Crewe. The nature of its design meaning it avoided topographic extremes and heavily built-up areas and is almost entirely rural in character.

An Environmental Statement was prepared in support of the passage of the hybrid Bill through Parliament; that includes the environmental impact assessment of the Proposed Scheme on the historic environment.

Royal Assent was granted in 2021: High Speed Rail (West Midlands - Crewe) Act.

The historic environment programme commenced in 2020, although geophysical survey (beyond that included in the Environmental Statement) was undertaken from 2018. Trial trench evaluation, built heritage survey and some mitigation works were completed.

The west leg of Phase 2b was proposed to connect to the high speed lines at Crewe and run through a largely rural environment to Manchester.

The results of the historic environment programme to date on Phase 2 will be made available here in due course.
