This collection comprises the digital records and files created during trial trench evaluation work at Drayton Bassett and subsequent post-excavation assessment and analysis. This includes image, report, site record, spreadsheet, GIS and CAD data. Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake the archaeological evaluation comprising the excavation of 422 trial trenches to the west of Drayton Bassett, Lichfield, southern Staffordshire.
Trial trenching has revealed a low density of generally undated archaeological features spread across the area covered by the work. A small amount of Iron Age and Romano‐British pottery was recovered, primarily from residual contexts. At least one of the two prehistoric flints collected was similarly residual. It is likely that the area remained an agricultural hinterland from at least the Iron Age until the present day. The finds assemblage is small and of negligible significance. The environmental assemblages contain post‐Roman indicator species, for example from an enclosure ditch spanning trenches 104, 116 and 470, and have some potential for future analysis.
As of May 2023, the physical records and finds are stored by Wessex Archaeology in Sheffield.
