This digital archive comprises geophysics, gis, spreadsheets and report data from the digital records and files created during the 2019-2020 Wessex Archaeology Multi-Channel GPR and Magnetometry Survey and includes both the RAW data and the subsequent intepretation presented as shapefiles.
The survey forms part of an ongoing programme of archaeological investigations being undertaken along the proposed route for the HS2 North Phase One, this survey being undertaken at Coleshill, Warwickshire. The survey area comprises arable and pasture fields with a combined total area of 7.6 ha. The gradiometer survey was undertaken on 11 October 2019, on the 4 and 5 February and on the 14 February 2020, and has identified anomalies thought to relate to archaeological activity. The features identified are likely to be associated with the surviving earthworks on the site pertaining to the Coleshill Manor moated site. This includes probable building demolition debris as well as a formal garden and associated pathways. The remaining anomalies are modern in origin, relating to agricultural activity including field drains, as well as a modern service and footpath.
The GPR survey was undertaken on 1 – 3 April and 6 – 8 April 2020 and has identified numerous responses that correspond to the moated site, an adjacent formal garden layout, as well as former land divisions identified on historical Ordnance Survey (OS) mapping. The remaining anomalies are thought to be evidence of localised natural variation in the underlying deposits and modern in origin, pertaining to agricultural activity. The earth resistance survey was undertaken between 14 – 18 May 2020 and has identified corresponding high resistance responses that are also thought to be associated with the moated site and surrounding garden.
