This collection comprises documents and spreadsheets listing the objects recovered during a Metal Detector Survey at Ruislip Sourthern Sustainable Placement Fields. The survey was carried out by Archaeology Wales during November and December 2021.
Between the 22nd of November and the 17th of December 2021 Archaeology Wales (AW) conducted a close resolution metal detecting survey across fields SSG and SSH at the southern end of the Southern Sustainable Placement Area (SSPA), West Ruislip in the London Borough of Hillingdon.
The close resolution metal detector survey was conducted in order to identify any further finds which may be associated with the hoard of Late Iron Age potins recovered from the field during a previous evaluation (1EW02-CSJ-EV-REP-S002-000134). An area of Romano-British settlement was also identified within this area during the evaluation. The metal detector survey was also designed to identify finds associated with this settlement. During the course of the survey a total of 718 artefacts were recovered. Of these one was of Romano-British date, six were medieval or post medieval, 683 were post medieval, fourteen were modern or post medieval, 6 were modern and eight were of unknown date. A further 99 signals were recorded where the objects were buried at a depth greater than 300mm. These objects were left in situ.
The artefacts recovered during the metal detector survey suggest little further archaeological potential for the site, with all except one find being of post medieval or modern date.
There are however 99 finds that were left in situ due to being below 300mm in depth. Of these 42 are located across the area of Roman settlement and in the area surrounding the hoard. It is possible that some of these finds may be of Late Iron Age or Roman date.
