Introduction

Cambridgeshire County Council Historic Environment Team operate the Archaeological Archive Store (CCC AAS). This is the final repository for all archaeological archives resulting from archaeological interventions undertaken in Cambridgeshire. CCC HET receives and manages archaeological material and the associated documentary archives created as a result of this work. We also receive material created by academic research and public/ community investigations. Cambridgeshire County Council has collected archaeological material from the county since 1990, in line with government legislation relating to the storage or archive material resulting from archaeological interventions (see National Planning Policy Framework 2023, Paragraph 211/Footnote 73).

Our role is to collect and curate Cambridgeshire’s archaeological archives and ensure their accessibility to researchers and members of the public in perpetuity. CCC AAS collections include archives of regional and national importance, for example those from the Saxon sites at Edix Hill, Barrington and Melbourn. We loan material to museums, other archaeological organisations, local groups and schools.

Our documentary and bulk, stable artefact archives are stored at Deepstore in Cheshire, with sensitive material stored at a converted civil defence bunker in Cambridge. We do not have the capacity or expertise to curate digital archives which should be deposited with a Core Trust Seal approved repository such as the ADS, to ensure their long-term preservation and accessibility of this digital material.
