Normally a hard, smooth fabric with small white limestone inclusions, light brown to buff (7.5YR 6/4-7/4) in colour.
Samples from Benghazi were found to contain frequent small inclusions of limestone and some foriminifera, with quartz grains, a little epidote and flecks of mica (Peacock & Williams, 1986, Class 41). However, given the wide geographical spread of the production sites on Crete there are bound to be a variety of fabrics.
