Hard, fairly rough, sandy fabric containing dark and white inclusions, light buff (between 10YR 8/4 to 7/3) in colour.
Thin sectioning shows grains of green or colourless augite, potash feldspar, volcanic rock fragments, a little quartz, limestone and flecks of mica. The petrology would support a source in Campania or Lazio, suggested by inscriptions (Peacock & Williams, 1986: Class 7).
