Introduction

Thirkelow Hay Barn, Dale Head Road, Brandside, Buxton, Derbyshire. Historic building recording (OASIS ID: archaeol5-351743)

In 2019 Archaeological Research Services Ltd was commissioned by Thirkelow Ltd to undertake a historic building recording to Historic England's Level 2 standard of Thirkelow Hay Barn, Dale Head Road, Brandside, Buxton, Derbyshire in order to discharge Condition 3 of the planning permission (Application. Ref. No. NP/DDD/0617/0585).

Thirkelow Farm is a 19th century farmstead with a dispersed plan layout with buildings arranged along a route way. Some traditional buildings survive including the farmhouse and the hayloft both of which are depicted on 19th century historic mapping. Originally, the hayloft was rectangular in shape with a small western projection; however, this projection has been incorporated into a later constructed lean-to structure which abuts the western elevation of the hayloft.

The historic building recording provides a comprehensive preservation by record of the former stable complex prior to conversion.
