From the Ground Up: Beyond Gender Theory in Archaeology

The 5th Gender and Archaeology Conference

9.x.98 - 10.x.98

This conference intends to examine the practical application of the many approaches that have characterized most research into the topic of gender archaeology so far, and to look at concrete examples of how gender theory can be applied in archaeological praxis. Papers are invited which focus on doing, rather than talking about doing, engendered archaeology. Abstracts of 200 words should be sent by the 15th April 1998.

For more information, or to send abstracts, contact Professor Bettina Arnold, Department of Anthropology, PO Box 413, Bolton Hall, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, WI 53201, tel: (414) 2994175, or email [email protected]. Images of Africa: Stereotypes and Realities

Society of Research on African Cultures '98

22.x.98 - 24.x.98

Montclair State University, New Jersey

The main theme of this conference is the understanding of the misrepresentation of African cultures through the imposition of western ideas of the categorisation of 'self' and 'other' in terms of a hierarchy of superiority and inferiority. It is hoped that through the study of how these thoughts came to influence and construct the definition of Africa as we 'know' it, we can begin to understand African civilisations better, and give them their due place in history. Papers are invited on these topics, abstracts due by July 15th 1998.

For more information, contact Mrs. Sally Garson at [email protected] for details, or send abstracts to Dr. Daniel Mengara at [email protected].
