English Heritage

English Heritage does not provide any direct research funding to individuals. However, it does part-fund Challenge Funding, which is run by the Council for British Archaeology. Challenge Funding is a scheme introduced by English Heritage and the Council for British Archaeology to encourage voluntary effort in making original contributions to the study and care of Britain's historic environment. Groups, societies and individuals are challenged to put forward proposals for innovative projects which will say something new about the history of local surroundings, and thus inform their future care. Awards can be used for almost anything that is directly related to a project, but not salary costs. A condition of all Challenge Funding awards is that relevant results should be made available for entry into the local Sites and Monuments Record. The Panel should give a decision within 8-12 weeks.

Awards are normally up to UKP500, but higher figures (to a ceiling of UKP1000) are not ruled out for schemes of exceptional promise.

Historic Scotland

Historic Scotland funds archaeological work mainly through contracts with established archaeological companies, or grants for partnership projects with corporate bodies (mainly universities). Self-contained pieces of work can be contracted to individuals. Grants will normally be used to support parts of projects run by other bodies where there is a substantial resource contribution from sources other then Historic Scotland, and where the work falls within Historic Scotland's guidelines for their own projects.
