The past is still too familiar. We clothe the peoples of the Mesolithic and Neolithic in our own styles. We see from their eyes with our eyes and make decisions for them with our priorities. This is, to a certain extent, unavoidable: I can never escape my body, and my place in this twentieth century world. But the past can be played with, teased and felt. And by this play we may begin to understand a little of the way in which we inhabit the world.
