44th International Congress of Americanists Fund

(administered by the British Academy)

Surplus funds resulting from the 44th International Congress of Americanists, held in Manchester in 1982, were given to the British Academy. Awards for Latin American studies are offered towards the expenses of British scholars visiting Latin America, or those of Latin American scholars invited to visit Britain. The funds available in 1996/97 totalled sterling 1500.

Closing dates: 30 September, 31 December, 28 February and 30 April, and applicants will be notified of the outcome approximately three months after the closing date.

Neil Ker Memorial Fund

(administered by the British Academy)

The object of this fund, established by the family and friends of Neil R Ker, FBA, is to promote the study of Western medieval manuscripts, and in particular those of British interest, by means of awards in support of all aspects of research, including travel and publication, made to both younger and established scholars of any nationality. It does not, however, fund travel to or attendance at conferences, workshops or seminars, either in the United Kingdom or elsewhere. In general, awards to not exceed sterling 1000.

Stein-Arnold Exploration Fund

(administered by the British Academy)

The Fund was established according to the terms of the Will of Sir Aurel Stein, FBA, to commemorate his friendship with Sir Thomas Arnold, FBA, for ‘the encouragement of research on the antiquities or historical geography or early history or arts of those parts of Asia which come within the sphere of the ancient civilisations of India, China, and Iran, including Central Asia, or of one or more of these and so that special consideration shall be paid, if possible, to research of this character bearing upon the territories comprised in the present Kingdom of Afghanistan including the region of ancient Bactria and in the north-western frontier region of India'. Research should be ‘so far as possible by means of exploratory work', and applicants must be British or Hungarian subjects. Awards rarely exceed sterling 2500.

K C Wong Fellowships

(administered by the British Academy)

The K C Wong Foundation of Hong Kong has established a Fellowships Scheme, known as the British Academy K C Wong Fellowships, to enable outstanding Chinese scholars to undertake periods of research in British institutions in collaboration with British colleagues. Candidates must be nationals of the People's Republic of China and scholars of postdoctoral or equivalent status, with a good command of spoken and written English. Awards totalling 60 months are available annually, in Fellowships of between three and twelve months in length.

Closing date: 31 December, for Fellowships commencing after 1 November 1997.

The Leverhulme Trust:

Special Research Fellowships

Approximately ten awards were available from the beginning of the 1996/97 academic year, in all subject areas. They are of 24 months' duration. Applicants must normally be under 35 years of age and must hold a doctorate or have equivalent research experience at the time of taking up the award and should have a proven record of research. Exceptionally, applications from those over age 35 will be considered if an appropriate and strong case can be made. Candidates should be resident in the UK and should not hold and have not held a full-time established post in a UK university or institution of comparable status.

These awards are made for the assistance of persons experienced in their own field pursuing investigations, particularly those who are or have been prevented by routine duties or like cause from undertaking or completing a research programme. Humboldt Research Fellowships for Foreign Scholars

Duration : 6-12 months or more

Provisions : Allowances D.M. 3000 to D.M. 3800 net per month. Travel assistance, an initial allowance, grants for language courses, etc.

Bursaries

Offers travel bursaries to Israel. Greek State Scholarships Foundation Awards

40 awards, open to graduates from Western Europe, the Americas, Australia and Japan. These awards are for posgraduate, doctoral or postdoctoral studies in Greece and to members of academic staff or research assistants in centres of Hellenic Studies who wish to pursue studies in Greece in the fields of linguistics, literature, philosophy, art or history.

Junior Fellowship in Commonwealth Studies

One annual award to a postgraduate student working for a higher degree in the fields of history, politics, international relations or literature, who require a further year to complete their studies and will be expected to complete theri doctoral degree in that year. The relation of the candidate's subject to the work and resources of the Institute will be taken into account in selecting the Fellow. The Fellowship will be worth sterling 6500 and will be tenable for one year only.

Charles Wallace Trust of Pakistan

Travel grants available for research in Pakistan. Applicants should be British citizens working for a PhD or of postdoctoral status. These grants are intended to cover return travel to Pakistan and a daily subsistence allowance. The money is paid in rupees, in Pakistan (for which a Pakistani bank account is needed). Rupees cannot be exported.

Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research

Provides scholars and advanced students from developing countries seeking additional training in anthropology, to enhance their skills or to expand or develop their areas of expertise. Candidates may pursue either a course of studies leading to a doctoral degree or a specific postdoctoral non-degree plan for obtaining advanced training. Only scholars/students from countries other than those listed here are eligible to apply. Career Development Loans

CDLs are reduced-interest bank loans operated on behalf of the Government by four banks -- Barclays, Co-operative, Royal Bank of Scotland, Clydesdale. Under certain circumstances, local training and Enterprise Councils (TECs) and Local Enterprise Companies (LECs) may be able to contribute towards a Career Development Loan. Applicants must be 18 or over and not in receipt of any other financial support. The course must last no longer than 2 years.
