Notes | A well-known open site containing Aboriginal archaeological material over a megafauna bone bed. Unit 5 - 8 includes a wide variety of megafauna remains (including Diprotodon and Genyornis sp.) between c. 28,000BP - >30,000 BP. Artefacts occur from unit 6 in association with megafauna remains - the origins of these artefacts form the basis of human/climate megafauna extinction debate. The majority of the archaeological assemblage occurs in unit 5 and includes horsehoof cores, small single and multi platform cores and flakes, from silcrete, quartz, quartzite, chert, conglomerate, feldspar porphory, and sandstone. Unit 5 forms the upper of three bone beds present to depths of 4 m in at this site. This sample was an attempt at dating bone remains from several of the megafauna species within units 6A-12. Only those samples discussed in the text with both EU and ESR results are included here. Grun et al's data raised questions about the age of SU 6. This sample was identified as 2037. |
