Border Archaeology was instructed by Donna Commock Acquisitions Manager Lidl UK GmbH to undertake a programme of archaeological field evaluation at the Archdale 73 Club, Windermere Drive, Blackpole, Worcester. The work was carried out in respect of a proposed development comprising demolition of the existing clubhouse and construction of new food store with associated car parking. A new access from Blackpole Road, the construction of a replacement clubhouse, with associated car parking, and laying out of a replacement adult football pitch were also proposed.
Groundworks revealed evidence of extensive landscaping to create a level surface for the present playing fields. The extremely shallow depth at which natural deposits were encountered across the western extent of the site suggests that overlying deposits in this area had been completely removed. A depression in the vicinity of the existing clubhouse had been filled during this phase of activity; however, no evidence for earlier occupation was revealed.
