Introduction

Block A, County Hall, Taunton, Somerset. Historic Building Record (OASIS ID: bristolb1-398681)

Between 2018 and 2020 Bristol & Bath Heritage Consultancy undertook a Level 3 Historic Building Record of Block A, County Hall, Taunton, Somerset. The Grade II listed Somerset County Council Offices were completed in 1935 in accordance with plans drawn up by architect E Vincent Harris.

The recording comprised a photographic record compiled before and during the refurbishment works, supplemented by photographic records supplied by building and asbestos contractors. The report analyses the chronological development of the building, using map and documentary evidence in combination with the photographic record, including changes from the originally intended layout and functions of each room between 1935 and 2018. Plans of the changes made during the refurbishment works carried out between 2018-2020 are included with the project archive.
