A brief metal detector survey was undertaken over the whole of the valley bottom over two days in September and October 2005, immediately following ploughing, although it was noted that activity by nighthawks has led to disturbed ground in several areas. Nonetheless, a number of finds, including an Anglo-Saxon pin and a strap-end were recovered. Further metal detector surveys were undertaken during the excavation. The reports can be downloaded from the 2006 and 2007 archives. Facilitated by the project in 2006 Lester Bell also deposited over 30 objects which he believed to have been recovered from the valley. These have been catalogued on the Portable Antiquities Scheme database as recovered from Burdale. The majority are 3rd and 4th century Roman coins, but there is a single Anglo-Saxon strap end.
