Introduction

Photographic and drawn record of pews removed from Bath Abbey nave (OASIS ID: cambrian1-367881)

This record has been made following a Faculty that gave Bath Abbey permission to remove the Victorian pews from the nave and dispose of them as part of the Abbey's Footprint development project. The work was undertaken to an agreed Written Scheme of Investigation and follows the guidelines for Level II recording as set out in Historic England's Understanding Historic Buildings: a Guide to Good Practice.

The record consists of a report; a key to the reference codes of the photographs and drawings; plans showing the seating layout and reference codes given to the pews; 404 photographs of the pews in the Abbey, including contextual photographs and detailed photographs of the pews and pew ends; and 287 rectified drawings of the pews and pew ends.

Hard copies of the report and photographs have been deposited in the Bath Abbey Archives (reference BA-P/2).
