This photograph shows the watchman's huts, the partially built (as of 2000) new dig-house behind and a visiting bus. The watchmen, employed from the village, have learnt a little English and use this to good effect in showing groups around. They sleep in shifts at the watchman's hut pictured. For many years the site had two watchmen, the one employed by the site and the other by the Friends Association of the Mevlana Museum. Watchmen are a possible source of difference between an excavation and the authorities because of the question of who should pay for their wages. In difficult regions, because they are also drawn from the local community, it is perhaps difficult to ascertain their effectiveness. However, at Catalhoyuk, because of the compactness of the site, they appear to have been exactly what is required. Certainly, illicit digging appears to have been almost non-existent.

These two images depict the Turkish flag over the Turkish excavations. The relationship between the Turkish state and the archaeological excavations is a central-theme of this research, and one that I feel will be increasingly discussed internationally as time goes on. Here, it is perhaps sufficient to note the importance of the 'zone of control' (I owe the phrase to the work of Raymond Jamous) that is thrown over the area to be dug by the state, control that is clearly symbollised by the flag waving above the site.

The dig-house complex forms a gradually growing community where those who are at the site, living away from the local villagers, work, rest and play. This sense of isolation can be frustrating but it perhaps has the advantage of ensuring that contact between the two communities can be built up slowly and carefully. The structure itself is in the form of a square, and the opening depicted the last part that needs to be built to complete the structure.

The relationship between the images of the mound generated by the earlier excavations and the present activities at the mound is endlessly fascinating. The 'Mother Goddess' image inspires secular nationalists, feminists and mythologists. It features in the publicity that the sponsors generate about the site. However, the new excavations, whilst they have benefitted greatly from this interest, have found little to support the contention that there were 'shrines' and little also to indicate an extensive matriachal culture. I sometimes feel that the site is busy burrowing away within a Mellaard shell with which, for better or for worse, it must interface with the outside world. It will be important to note the next step, because there may well emerge a tension between conflicting views as new evidence emerges, even if those most associated with the work itself (such as the Director, Ian Hodder) are reluctant to impose any one over-arching interpretation.

The display centre, an integral part of the dig-house, is a pleasant single display space about ten metres by ten metres. Whilst obviously such a display centre is desirable for many reasons, in part it is a priority because the achaeology itself may not be self-explanatory. Troy, for example, amongst Anatolian sites faces the same problem. Only copies, not originals, of objects are in the display centre. Study finds are held in depots at the site, artefacts in Ankara, and partly in Konya, though the local town of Cumra may also succeed in making a bid to found their own museum.

The overall way of presenting the site to the public, and the interaction that outsiders may forge with the site's material, is a long-term pre-occupation. Partly such interaction is created through the internet, but the more old-fashioned visitor's comments book has received a surprising level of comment, with many different views as to the place of CH expressed. These shots are placed in the archive with a view to including translated extracts in the final publication volume.

The financial arrangement between the Turkish authorities and the British Institute of Archaeology is that the project team, headed by Professor Hodder, be responsible for the financing of the site. This has been achieved partly through the research councils, but also by the creation of commercial sponsorship and a 'friends' society in Istanbul that has been extremely effective. 'Radical' European archaeologists have found this aspect of the site's operation problematic, with the implication that academic work legitimises a status quo with which they are not content, whether it be a 'capitalist' or a nationalist one. Whilst the 'capitalist' debate now appears rather anachronistic, the 'nationalist' debate is entirely topical. My argument throughout this project is that when nationalism incorporates multi-culturalism it can be a thoroughly beneficial force: in this respect, I disagree with those who suggest that nationalism and archaeology must always be as separated as possible.

One of the most interesting aspects of ethnographic work at KuCukkoy is the comparative wealth of the village. This, achieved through agriculture, means that the economic input of the site into the community is only a small fraction of their total cash resources. This picture shows piles of threshed grain gradually accumulating. As the pile on the left shows, they are covered with a thin layer of earth and kept under this protective covering until sold for cash.

Agadami is a large, low mound that lies on the field border between KK and a larger, neighbouring village called Karkin. Renowned for being the site of bad luck, there are many stories in circulation of devils been seen nearby, or of accidents taking place as a person drives by on the road. Today, in spite of its reputation, as can be seen in the Image, it is ploughed extensively. Its skirts are trimmed by passing tractors, and must be regarded as a potential target to be completely flattened. Until now, it probably has been saved by a combination of its name as being dangerous and the fact that, being comparatively flat, it does not actually impeded farming from taking place on its surface. The man pictured is Mr Naci Bakirci, my representative.
