Introduction

Locking Parklands School, Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. Archaeological Evaluation (OASIS ID: cotswold2-342314)

In July 2018, Cotswold Archaeology (CA) carried out an archaeological evaluation at the proposed site of Locking Parklands School, Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset. The evaluation recorded seven ditches and a posthole at the site. The ditches do not correspond in alignment or location to any former boundaries visible on 19th century cartographic sources. Dating evidence was scarce, but two of the ditches contained Roman pottery. A possible Roman ladder settlement has been recorded previously some 550m north-east of the evaluation site, and it is possible that the ditches exposed by the present evaluation are part of an associated Roman field system. The evaluation recorded no evidence for preserved peat or organic deposits, indicating that peat layers recorded previously to the immediate north do not extend as far south as the evaluation site.
