The aim of the Derbyshire Historic Landscape Characterisation project was to map the historic landscape character (HLC) of Derbyshire excluding the Peak District National Park. It was intended to replace the Historic Landscape Character Assessment that was carried out in the 1990s, by using the current HLC guidelines employed by the Historic England funded HLC projects to give a more objective and consistent approach. It was a broad brush, rapid assessment of Derbyshire, with the oldest map used being the 1st edition OS map of c. 1880. It was also intended as a starting point for more detailed local HLC studies, for strategic planning projects, and to analyse the HLC of Derbyshire on a county level (this part of the project is yet to be completed).
