RAF Bawdsey was established as a military installation in 1936 for development of the first RADAR system, which would become the first of a chain of radar stations around the coast of Britain by WW2. Bawdsey station was bombed on at least 12 occasions during the subsequent war but survived. The base was maintained by the RAF until 1991, when it was used to house the Bloodhound missile. A variety of military monuments exist within the base, including pillboxes, anti-tank obstacles, air-raid shelters, anti-aircraft gun emplacements, bomb stores, blockhouses and strongpoints.
