The 50 miles of the Suffolk coast between Lowestoft and Felixstowe is designated as a Heritage Coast, a classification designed to protect coastlines of special scenic and environmental value from undesirable development. It is characterised by low marshes and reed beds interspersed with beaches of sand and shingle and several long estuaries. RSPB nature reserves are located at Aldeburgh, Orford, and Minsmere, and the area is renowned for its numerous butterflies and wild flowers. In addition to its natural features the Heritage Coast is also notable for the former historic towns of Dunwich and Orford, both now reduced to villages, and Aldeburgh, which hosts an internationally renowned music festival. The Suffolk Coast and Heaths Path runs along the length of the coast.
