Full Record - Melton Lodge (PRN: 10296)

Site or location nameMelton Lodge
Summary
DescriptionThe Chester Chronicle in July 1916 carries a report of a meeting to consider starting a Red Cross Supply Depot at Melton Lodge. This was agreed initially opening two days per week. The building was later used by the Surgical Requisites Association with work hours of 10-5 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Surgical Requisites Association was an offshoot of Queen Mary's Needlework Guild, who undertook to supply surgical dressings. Two women, Anne Acheson and Elinor Halle, who were both sculptors, devised a way of making splints out of papier mache that were both lighter and cheaper than those made of traditional materials. Old sugar bags were found to be the best material, and these were collected from grocers and members of the public with the help of boy scouts. There may have been around six supply depots outside London including one at Bath War Hospital. Laady Crutchley was the head of the first depot at 17 Mulberry Walk, London. The building has been converted to flats.
