Summary | IWM Duxford | ||||
Description | Former RAF airfield, now the Imperial War Museum Duxford. No. 35 Training Depot Station (TDS) Duxford was established during the First World War to train pilots for operational duty. Construction of No.35 Training Depot Station started in October 1917 with German Prisoners of War employed to construct the airfield's buildings. TDS Duxford became operational as early as February 1918, before construction was completed, and officially opened in July 1918. The airfield employed over 850 men and women; including newly qualified US Air Service ground crew from March 1918. Although only active in the final months of the war Duxford TDS trained 126, making a valuable contribution to the war effort. 13 airmen died in training accidents on the airfield during this period. The First World War airfield consisted of domestic and technical sites, bisected by what is now the A505. The domestic site occupying the area North of the A505 and technical site and associated airfield occupying the area to the South. The technical site comprised workshops and three large double-span General Service sheds and one single-span General Service shed. The three double-span sheds survive, along with a workshop, MT store, Chapel and Women's WC. Eight temporary Bessoneau Hangars were located on the South-West extent of the technical site, originally constructed with help of the No.159 US Aero Squadron & No.137 Aero Squadron. A single barrack block survives within the domestic site to the North. | ||||
