PRN10796
Site or location nameSite of Royal Army Clothing Depot
SummaryThe Queens Hall
DescriptionSite of the Swinegate Royal Army Clothing Depot. Originally the Tramways Depot, the building was requisitioned by the War Department in 1915. Cloth, from local producers, was stored here before being sent to manufacturers to be turned into uniforms. This significantly decreased the production time of uniforms. The depot employed 150 staff. King George V and Queen Mary visited the depot during a three day tour of Yorkshire. The site of the original depot, Queens Hall, was demolished in 1989.
