Site or location name | Kirk Oer, Roberton
Summary | |||||
Description | Orientation and Shapes: L-shaped structure with outside of L south and east facing, inside of L north and west facing, gables end west facing. Dimensions: South facing 58.3 feet / 17.75 metres, West facing 18.9 feet / 5.77 metres, North facing 39.2 feet / 11.96 metres. Features: There are 5 hopper style windows south facing, one west facing (possibly added by current owner) and 2 north facing. There are 2 single square-head doors south facing and 4 north facing. These appear to be added following the erection at Kirk O'er as the building became used as a byre. Function and Phasing: It would appear that the building was re-erected in a new configuration to fit it's new location and significant alterations were made in the process. The building is now L-shaped. Additional doors have been added. The building now has two functions: A garage and storage area for the Forman Hall (east facing range) and a feed store, equipment store, workshop and farm animal accommodation (south facing range). In the past it has been used as a byre; there are concrete stalls, drainage channels and metal dividers evident. There has been an extensive alteration programme. A concrete base has been built and possibly the hut has been cut to fit the current location. The overhang of the tongue and groove corrugated iron roof has 2 original vents/boiler chimneys. One of these is blocked. The north facing wall has doors that appear to have been added since the hut arrived at Kirk O'er. Asbestos and metal sheeting has been used internally as room dividers. Square headed nails used throughout. It is structurally intact but unrecognisable as a First World War hut. Roofing: Building is roofed, gabled style and is corrugated. Blocked vent/chimney present in rooms 1 and 3.
