Summary | |||||
Description | Orientation and shape - Single-storey structure on slight gradient with slope rising to the South. Rectangular in shape with additional protrusions to accommodate the entrance porch and chimney stack. Dimensions- North facing wall 7.25 metres, East facing wall 5.13 metres, South facing wall 7.25 metres and West facing wall 6.42 metres. Single unit in plan. Features- The building is constructed from brick with a concrete rough casting outer skin. There is one Heavy Wood Frame door on the north side of the structure in a protruding porch. Access is via 4 concrete steps. The door including frame is 0.93 metres wide and 0.89 metres internally. A lever metal handle, of indeterminate age, is attached. The steps are 1.16 metres wide and 0.2 metres in height. A wider concrete base sits below the bottom step at ground level. There are 2 windows, one east-facing and one west-facing, both 0.74 metres wide and 1.31 metres high. Each is divided into 20 panes but very little glass is present. A 4-pane 'hopper' style section opens inwardly. There are two vents with associated lintels visible at ground-level in the east wall. The vents are 0.65 metres wide and 0.57 metres high. Each vent has 7 'fins' which are 6 millimetres thick and 11 centimetres deep. The west wall contains 2 metal hatches visible from the exterior. The first cannot be opened although a round handle is present at the bottom. Its function cannot be identified at present. It is 45 centimetres wide and 39 centimetres high and there appears to be no access from inside the building. The second hatch opens to the left via a small hole. It is 23 centimetres wide and 41 centimetres high. On the inside of the hatch door stencilling is present but this is difficult to identify. This possibly says 'No.17 xxxxx BATCH'. The hatch provides direct access, via a round hole, to the chimney stack. This would appear to be a rodding eye for clearing the chimney. The chimney stack in the west wall has a vent at its upper level above the roof. It has 6 'fins'. An external ground-level drainage channel surrounds the perimeter of the building. Some sections are intact and some are destroyed or not visible. Minimal access was made to the interior of the structure due to the potential presence of hazardous substances. A brief inspection revealed a single plan building with cast iron, or steel, metal frames which could be used for a mechanism to hang garments. Close to the entrance door and below the chimney stack and rodding eye there is a sunken pit approximately the size of a bathtub. Two metal steps provided access to the sunken pit. There was evidence of a metal guard rail around the edge presumably to protect persons from falling in to the pit. Other furnishings were visible on the drying hut floor but these were not inspected. Function and phasing- it is understood that the drying hut was used for drying horse tack and at a later time soldiers' uniforms. Dates of construction are not known at present but it is suspected to pre-date the First World War and to still be in use after 1918. Today the building appears to be unused. Roofing- Flat roof with felt lining. 6 saplings are growing from the roof surface. Stalactites were visible inside indicating they had breached. Further analysis of the roof was not undertaken.' | ||||
