Site or location name | West Deloraine Farm, Ettrick Valley
Summary | |||||
Description | Orientation and Shapes: Rectangular structure with longitudinal sides facing east and west and short ends facing north and south with entrance to south. Blocked door at north end. Dimensions: West facing 13.1 metres / 43 feet and south facing 7.45 metres / 24.6 feet. Features: There are 4 dormer-style windows, 2 west facing and 1 east facing with the remains of a second dormer on the east side. There are 2 windows containing wired glass on the north facing side and 2 south facing. Each window has 3 rows of 2 panes (6 per window), the top two are hinged for opening. There is a door frame on the south side - this has possibly been altered by the owners. There is an equivalent door on the north side but this appears blocked - access precluded a full assessment. There are vents on the north and south facing sides above the door. Function and Phasing: The building more recently has been used as a general farm store. Industrial-style electric lights and shades are in situ. The structure has been erected on a concrete foundation which has raised the height. The foundation is 0.86 metres / 34 inches high. Internally, there is evidence of later partitioning using railways sleepers and asbestos panels to create stalls or separate storage areas. One stall has a stone sink in the concrete floor - possibly for keeping livestock. According to the farmer numerous asbestos panels were brought to the farm in the early 1950s. Roofing: Corrugated iron. Roof supported by corrugated steel half-circles forming 7 internal bays. Each bay is 1.85 metres / 6 feet wide.'
