Summary | |||||
Description | Orientation and shape - Single-storey structure on side of hill, ground rises to the West. Rectangular in shape. North-South alignment. Dimensions – North facing wall 4.16 metres, East facing wall 6.29 metres, South facing wall 4.18 metres and West facing wall 6.27 metres. The height of the building is 2.30 metres. Single unit in plan. No separate rooms. Features - The building is constructed from brick with a concrete rough casting outer skin. Internally there is evidence of a concrete skin which has been plastered. There are 2 door cavities. One facing North East and one facing South West. They are each set 0.77 metres from the nearest corner. Both door cavities measure 0.94 metres wide and 2.12 metres high. At the top of each is a void measuring 1.20 metres wide, possibly to hold a lintel. The concrete surrounding the door cavity is 0.025 metres thick. On the vertical edges of the cavities small pieces of wood have been inserted into the mortar at irregular intervals. Possibly use to support door frame timbers although no evidence of this remains. At the North entrance the stone floor is visible. The South side has a door step leading into the structure. On the East wall there are 2 windows; one cavity and one window. Both measure 1 metre high and 1.31 metres wide. The South East window frame remains in situ with the inner 4 panes of glass. The window appears to pivot outwards. The catch is visible internally. North East window is missing but the frame is possibly on the floor inside the building. There is no indication of a pivot on this window. A door handle and lock was found inside the structure. The North East corner of the building is partially destroyed, evidence remains of a drain pipe in this area. Inner East Wall has 4 sets of 2 batons still visible. Located below the window and window cavity. It measures 3.45 metres in length. The bottom row of batons are set 0.26 metres below the top row. No other evidence visible. Function unknown. Function and phasing – it is understood that the building was used for gas training. Today the building appears to be unused. Roofing – Flat roof with concrete. There are saplings growing from the roof surface. Stalactites were visible inside indicating the roof had breached. There is evidence of metal rods at roof level, all the way round the building. This may have been used to support guttering.' | ||||
