Full Record - Stobs Camp Store No.1 (PRN: 11498)

PRN11498
Site or location nameStobs Camp Store No.1
Summary
DescriptionOrientation and shape - Single-storey structure. Rectangular in shape. North-South alignment. High roofed - there may have been an attic space. Dimensions – North wall 9.45 metres, East wall 18.72 metres, South wall 9.56 metres and West wall 18.74 metres. Features - The building is constructed from corrugated iron panels. 9 steel cables are visible running from the roof to the ground giving the building a tied- down look. Due to the height of the roof measurements of the cables were not possible. They are situated as follows: 1 on each of the 4 corners of the building, 1 in the middle of each of the North, South and East walls, the remaining 2 are on the West wall. The North wall has a high level window in the eaves. It appears fixed and contains 24 small panes of glass. Due to its height measurements were not possible. On the East wall there are 2 doors and 1 window. The window is located 0.72 metres from the South East corner and measures 1.10 metres wide and 1.36 metres high. It has space for 16 panes of glass, 8 of which remain. There are wooden supports on either side of the window which possibly held shutters. A clasp is still visible on the right hand side. A wire grille is visible inside, directly behind the window. The first door is located 4.90 metres from the South East corner. It measures 0.87 metres wide and 2.15 metres high. It is made from wood and has a locked padlock on it. The second is a double door made from corrugated iron. Located 6.46 metres from the North East corner it measures 2.82 metres wide and 2.37 metres high. 3 hinges are still visible, 1 on the left door and 2 on the right. Also on the East wall is a panel located to the right hand side of the window. It has a central circular hole measuring 0.17 metres in diameter. Surrounding this are 4 smaller holes. Above which is a T bar which extends out from the wall by 0.41 metres. On the roof directly above this are 2 circular holes which appear to be of similar size to the one measured. It is possible that this was where the stove and chimney were connected. A rectangular outline was visible on the North end of the East wall, possibly made from something having leant against it. On the South wall, in the eaves, there is a large intact window containing 36 panes of glass. A small section of which appears to be open. Due to its height measurements were not possible. Telegraph cables are evident in the upper section of the wall. A small cable runs from underneath the South window along the wall and round to the East wall where it disappears above the right hand side of the South East window. The West perimeter wall has 4 metallic plates on the ground, measuring 0.62 metres by 0.46 metres. Their function is unknown. There are a further 2 plates on the North wall perimeter. No access was made to the inside of the building. When looking through the East wall window a door, walls, cabinet and a low ceiling could be seen. There was also evidence of farm paraphernalia. Function and phasing – It is understood that the building was a storage facility. Today the building appears to be used as a farm building / storage area. Roofing – The roof appears to be intact, it is also made from corrugated iron. Guttering is visible in sections.'
