Summary | Pinewood Sanitorium; London Open Air Sanatorium
Description | Pre- First World War:- Initially called the London Open Air Sanitorium, it was situated in Pinewood near Wokingham, in eighty five acres of grounds. It was built at a cost of £20,000 funded millionaire lenders Phillips & Rube, and run by The Association for the Prevention of Consumption. First World War:- During the First World War it was used for the treatment of officers with tuberculosis. In June 0f 1917 it recieved £1000 to support this work from the Joint War Committee. Post First World War:- After the war in 1919 the hospital was taken over by the Metropolitan Asylums Board – at this point it held up to 160 patients. In June 1940 it was agreed that Pinewood would be used for treatment of New Zealand service sick. A hutted hospital was built 300 yards to the west of the original hospital buildings (centered around SU 8391 6600), and it became known as 1 NZ General Hospital. After the Second World War in 1948 it was run by the Northwest Metropolitan Regional Hospital Board after becoming part of the NHS. The hospital closed in 1966, the last patient having been discharged on 21st of January. As at 2018:- The eastern end of the site, which was the area used during the First World war, was later demolished and redeveloped as offices for Hewlett-Packard, who later vacated the site in 2003, it was then taken over by Johnson & Johnson who still remain at the site as of March 2016. The western end of the site, which was used during Second World War, is currently owned by Wokingham Borough Council, who lease it to Wokingham Without Parish Council who offer leisure facilities, many of which run out of the WW2 hutments.'
