PRN22274
Site or location nameSouth Gare Marine Club
Summary
DescriptionTees Archaeology Sites and Monuments Record states: Submarine Mine Laying Depot. 2m high rectangular wall with gun ports & raised pill-boxes in corners. Eastern wall dug into breakwater. Entrances in N & S walls, each with a jetty. Third entrance in W wall bricked up & the remains outside of it are badly storm damaged. Bunkers on either side of W exit, one of which has original iron door. This bunker is faintly marked no.3 shelter. Several apparently contemporary brick buildings lie within the perimeter wall - possible barracks & store rooms? Buildings are currently used by South Gare marine club. Sited on made ground. (1) The site is possibly listed under 'Various - Middlesbrough' as 'Old Submarine Mining Establishment (T. F. Drill Hall and Ground) / Old Submarine Mining Instructional Establishment / Sitefor Battery'. SITE VISIT: There is a raised wall that surrounds the site with holes in the side that presumably were used for siting. In the south west corner there is a concrete pillbox. A number of double pitched red brick houses were present and were presumably used as the barracks for troops. There is a single gated entrance on either side which also allows vehicles to access. '
