Full Record - Fairy Cove Battery (PRN: 22275)

PRN22275
Site or location nameFairy Cove Battery
Summary
DescriptionThe battery has now been demolished. HER record states: There are few details of this battery which replaced the earlier 'North Battery' (HER 4753) and 'Cold Wham' (HER 4759) nearby. Both of the earlier sites had eroded into the sea by the mid 1800s. A report of 1854 recommended that a new battery be built at Fairy Cove to mount three guns. Only one plan of the site is available and this is in poor condition. It shows between 3 and 5 semi-circular gun emplacements with three buildings behind. By 1876 the battery had fallen into disrepair due to the cliffs crumbling beneath it. The area was eventually redeveloped with the promenade in the late 1880s. Although the battery was levelled its foundation was incorporated into the promenade to allow its reuse. '
