Digital Object Identifiers

Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are persistent identifiers which can be used to consistently and accurately reference digital objects and/or content. The DOIs provide a way for the ADS resources to be cited in a similar fashion to traditional scholarly materials. More information on DOIs at the ADS can be found on our help page.

Full Record - Mousehold Heath practice trenches (PRN: 223)

PRN223
Site or location nameMousehold Heath practice trenches
Summary
DescriptionA small section of possible practice trench. Running South South-East from grid reference TG2451910539 to TG2451910539 (approximate). Currently under tree cover and to the South of Post-Medieval quarrying. The earthworks consist of a small section of fire trench with two small lengths of curving communications trench at each end of the firing trench. This section of trench is approximately 20m meters in length and survives as a shallow earthwork up to around 20cm in depth. The firing bays of the fire trench feature what appear to be semi-circular traverses, a feature that was common earlier in the war. The firing bays are approximately 1.5m in length and 60cm wide, suggesting a half-scale practice trench. Half-scale trench systems were used for training purposes rather than defence, with similar examples surviving at Cannock Chase, Staffordshire and Redmires Reservoir, South Yorkshire. These trenches could relate to the Second World War defence of the former RAF airfield (RAF Mousehold Heath) which is situated to the East. Further investigation on the ground and a thorough earthwork survey would confirm their presence and date.
