Summary | |||||
Description | Listed under 'Accommodation of Troops'. 'The Gem' was at 112 High Street (2). A cinema is shown in approximately the right position on the Ordnance Survey 1915 1:2500 map. This is a two storey building. The building has undergone significant changes to the first storey as it is now shop fronts. There are painted white columns that are made of brick / stone with a single entrance on the left of the building. To the right of this there are two large glass fronted windows which are newly added. Between the two buildings it is possible to access the street behind using a walkway – open corridor. Between storeys one and two, there are three rows of plastic boarding with the words, ‘Redcar Central Arcade’ above. On the second storey there are five single sash windows with plastic boarding above them. This building is very square and much taller than the buildings nearby. It has a flat roof and the walls have been coated which makes visualising the bricks unclear. However, on the right of the building, a red brick wall can be visualised towards the rear. The rear of the building has been restored and is not the original build. The Gem, showed films in the evening, but was the assembly room by day. This was located at 112 High Street. According to the first world war records, this was used as the accommodation for troops. | ||||
