Full Record - Twatt Drill Hall (PRN: 280)

PRN280
Site or location nameTwatt Drill Hall
Summary
DescriptionBuidings at Risk register gives 'Former Territorial Army hall dated 1885. Roughly rectangular plan, red sandstone construction with slate roof and overhanging eaves. Large rectangular windows (now blocked). Cartshed opening to north elevation. Later porch addition to main entrance.' and Canmore 'A drill hall is shown at the junction of what are now the A986 and A967 roads, on the 2nd edition OS 1:2500 map (surveyed 1900). The hall and the instructor's house are shown within the same land-holding. Both survive. The T-shaped hall, now derelict, presented five bays to the A967 - two sash-and-case windows on both sides of an entrance through a central door - it appears that an original arched doorway under a pediment (the arch still just visible) has been covered by a later porch. Large wagon doors have been broken through the gable to the A986. The leg of the T is broad and the gable end is pierced by three windows. There is a small lean-to in the angle between the leg and head of the T. The instructor's house was originally a squat-T-shaped building in the same stone as the hall, now with a harled extension. The hall appears to be a semi-derelict agricultural building, while the cottage is a dwelling. It is not known which units, if any, used the hall in the First World War. Osborne (2006) does not record this hall. Information from HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project (GJB) 17 July 2013.' Unit in 1914 was Orkney Royal Garrison Artillery - Defended Ports (No 2 Company).
