Full Record - Ellon Drill Hall (PRN: 301)

PRN301
Site or location nameEllon Drill Hall
SummaryVictoria Hall
DescriptionCanmore gives 'There is some confusion about the precise location of the Ellon drill hall. Osborne (2006)) tells that the local Gordon Highlander volunteer unit contributed to the cost of building the Victoria Hall (which still survives) and were given a room to use as an armoury and shared use of the rest of the building. However, the 3rd epoch Ordnance Survey 1:2500 map shows a separate drill hall building attached to the south side of the boundary wall of Victoria Hall. While this building’s footprint was still marked on recent maps, modern satellite photographs now show the area as under grass. In 1914-18 the Ellon drill hall was the drill station for F Squadron, 2nd Scottish Horse and E Company, 5th Gordon Highlanders. The offices of Ellon Council in Station Road are located in a replacement drill hall erected in 1936 (Shepherd 2006). Information from HS/RCAHMS World War One Audit Project (GJB) 18 June 2013.' Given that the building shown on maps is directly on boundary of Victoria Hall it may represent a post 1908 extension of the facilities to provide an indoor rifle range.
