Site or location name | Bingham WI hut
Summary | |||||
Description | Accommodation Huts dating from the First World War period. These huts were re-erected on the current site in 1925 (following their sale by the military) to provide a meeting place for the local Women's Institute (WI), a function for which they are still used. It is highly likely that these huts were once part of the nearby Clipstone Camp, an extensive First World War camp used for the training of soldiers (Pastscape Monument number: 1411805) located 26km North-West. Located on the Western side of Station Street, South of Old Mill Court, Bingham. 50m South of Bingham train station. The structure is rectangular in plan and orientated East to West. The hut is approximately 28m in length and 6m wide. Constructed from wooden panels, with an internal wooden frame, and bituminous felt roofing material. The hut sits on a concrete base. The hut has been modified from its original configuration and consists of two Accommodation Huts joined together to create a single structure. The two sections of original hut can be determined with the first comprising of a complete Accommodation Hut, of the standard 60ft x 16ft type. The second section, forming an extension to the West gable end of the first structure, comprises of a short section of standard hut in a highly modified state. A doorway is present in the East gable end of the structure. This doorway has been widened to accommodate double doors and is surrounded by an open porch which is a later addition. No doorway is present in the West gable end of the extension. A number of windows are present and appear to conform to the standard Accommodation Hut design. The North facing wall of the hut has six windows present however, the current window frames are replacements of the original 'hopper opening' type (see photographs). The South facing wall has a total of ten windows. Six of these are present in the first section of the Accommodation Hut with an additional four windows present in the extension. Internally the structure has seen some modification with the addition of numerous partition walls and the addition of a low ceiling. Roof supports are visible on each side of the hut, in line with the top of the window frames, and occur frequently (approximately every 1.5-2m). Overall the hut remains in fair condition and has been subject to modification. However, the original sections and features of both huts can be ascertained.
