Summary | The Civic/Civic Hall
Description | Built by Charles Harvey in 1877 the Harvey Institute and Public Hall were both requisitioned for military use by the 13th & 14th Battalions York & Lancaster Regiment (The Barnsley Pals). Initially used as an Enlistment Office when recruitment of the Barnsley Pals Battalion commenced on the 17th of September 1914,the Harvey Institute became the Battalion Headquarters, while the Public Hall was used as a billet and mess facility. A sentry was posted at the Eldon Street entrance to prevent 'undesirables' from entering the Public Hall. The Harvey Institute continued as Battalion Headquarters and Billet until May 1915 when the Battalion moved to the specially constructed Newhall Training Camp (HFL Ref- 39), near Silkstone.
