Site or location name | Carlton Hill Barracks
Summary | |||||
Description | Carlton Hill Barracks was first used for the 4th West Yorkshire Militia in 1865. During the First World War, this site was the Leeds Rifles Battalions headquarters. It is reported that Carlton Barracks was used as a training ground, parade location and potential recruitment point for the Leeds Pals Battalion. A workers’ battalion was proposed alongside the Pals. Volunteers for this battalion were redirected into the Leeds Rifles. The entrance is through Carlton Gate which leads to a group of structures part of the territorial army base. The oldest buildings, the drill hall and barracks, are located North-west of the complex, between Carlton Hill and Lofthouse Terrace. The structures have long rectangular shape and red brick-built. The drill hall takes the west side of the complex and maintains the same exterior aspect from 1880s-1890s. The building illustrates some Victorian Gothic features. The wooden gate has pointed arch shape, on each side there are pinnacles made of brick and stone, topped with a cross motif. Above the door, there are several decorative motifs and the inscription “3rd VB (Volunteer Battalion) Prince of Wales Own West Yorkshire Regimentâ€. The interior of the building has been modernised for other purposes. Through a tower block, the drill hall is connected to the barracks, which had a function of accommodation and administrative centre and now modernised as office spaces. The former entrance to Carlton Hill Barracks was situated in Carlton Hill, but it is no longer used. Although re-painted in black, it is still possible to see the inscription “Carlton Barracks – Leeds Rifles†in the arched doorway.
