Full Record - Lofthouse Park (PRN: 7996)

PRN7996
Site or location nameLofthouse Park
Summary
DescriptionLofthouse Park, Wakefield was the site of a major Civilian Internment Camp during the First World War. The site stood to the East of Leeds Road, across from what is now the Lofthouse Hill Golf Course club house. The site became derelict after the First World War. The camp was opened in October 1914, becoming one of the most important Civilian Internment Camps in the mainland UK. The camp remained in use until October 1918, when internees were moved to Knockaloe Internment Camp (HFL Ref: 124), the Isle of Man. Internees paid ten shillings a week ''for the privilege of being there'' according to Paul Cohen-Portheim.
