Full Record - Dunfermline, Lochend Camp (PRN: 7998)

PRN7998
Site or location nameDunfermline, Lochend Camp
Summary
DescriptionThis is described in ''British Regiments 1914-18'' p84 as being used by the 11th (Reserve) Battalion Black Watch from May 1916. On 1/9/16 they became the 38th Training Reserve Batt. in 9th Reserve Brigade in Dunfermline. The camp is not shown on the 1920 OS map, and a Luftwaffe aerial photo from 1940 (MS1000/10) shows the camp in a derelict state. There is no evidence of it having been used in WW2 despite local folklore of it being a PoW camp. The camp is entered along an overgrown metalled road. Around 14 concrete hut bases can be seen across the field, which slopes sharply to the South. At the western end is a roofless brick building which contains a concrete platform in one corner, possibly a drill or lecture building. To the rear (North) of this in an adjacent field there appears to be another building, but I was unable to gain access on the date of visit due to the presence of livestock. At the bottom of the hill is the remains of a brick building which appears to have been the wash-house; on either side of it are concrete hut bases and traces of Nissen hut attachment points can be seen on the gables. Comment- Not officially listed as a PoW camp in WW1, but appears to have been used as such in some capacity. Gordon Wilkie (AFIS) 10/06/2018
