Site or location name | N. Queensferry, Carlingnose Point Battery
Summary | |||||
Description | Construction began in May 1899 and was completed by July 1901. Two 6' guns were installed in 1902, and the pits were modified so that they could fire inland; this was the only Forth battery able to do so. Formed part of Inner Forth defences, one of three concentric rings of defences on both sides of the Firth which started around Anstruther. In November 1916 guns were removed to Pettycur Bay Battery, Kinghorn. Site continued to be Fire Control Post, Forth Inner Defences. Housing has developed on site since the 1990s, and part of the battery itself has been developed into an art gallery. The shell hoists survive in the underground magazines. Other parts of the site are owned by other people. On the clifftop next to the battery is a WW1 minefield control bunker, and a steel submarine mining pier lies offshore just beneath the cliffs.
