Full Record - Dalmeny, Hound Point Battery (PRN: 8027)

PRN8027
Site or location nameDalmeny, Hound Point Battery
SummaryThe Warrens, Dalmeny Estate, Peatdraught Bay.
DescriptionA pre-war battery in the Forth Inner Defences consisting of 2xBL6' MkVII guns on CP MkIII mounts, a three-roomed rectangular building which was the engine house and magazine, and remains of the BOP (Battery Observation Post). Guns were removed to Leith Docks in 1915, replaced Autumn 1916 by 2x12Pdr QF Naval 18CWT guns. This required the gun platforms to be remodelled, creating a two-tier 'wedding cake' look. Both pits have a concrete parapet, and the railings and ladders remain. Ground floor of each platform was an office. Also protected landward side by a double line of pillboxes, six in each (removed). Accommodation huts were immediately to the west, and bases can still be seen. Appears to be a concrete sewage tank on beach in front of the battery, and about half a mile west along the path, where it turns right into the Dalmeny Estate, is a small pebble-dashed building thought to be the telephone exchange, now used as a electricity substation. This is not listed.
