Full Record - The Cinema (PRN: 8067)

PRN8067
Site or location nameThe Cinema
SummaryBingo Club
DescriptionBrick built entrance with steps and portico. Large hall to rear with industrial style roof ventilators. The cinema opened on 23rd September 1916 with seating for 750. The township of Gretna was built to accommodate the munition workers at the HM Factory Gretna. In 1915 the mainly female workers were housed in timber dormitory huts known as 'Timbertown' hastily erected by largely Irish builders. The notable planner Raymond Unwin had joined the Local Government Board in December 1914 and from 1915 was seconded to the Ministry of Munitions where he planned the layout for Gretna and Eastriggs. From 1915-1918 a collection of substantial buildings including shops, churches, cinema and housing were constructed that define the city. Open spaces mark the location of some of the avenues of wooden huts. Regeneration plans consider replacement of part or all of the building with retail or office space suggested.
