SummaryThe Palace Hotel
DescriptionConstruction of the Hotel Metropole was completed in 1904 and soon renamed the Palace Hotel. At the outbreak of war in August 1914 the hotel was quickly requisitioned by the Admiralty to serve as a hospital for injured Navy personnel due to its size and location near to the Thames Estruary. At its height the Queen Mary's Royal Naval Hospital housed 350 beds. Wounded Army personnel were also treated at the hospital, including 169 Belgian Soldiers. According to southendtimeline.com this was the only auxiliary naval hospital in the South of England.
