Full Record - Stranding of Lord Airedale (PRN: 8555)

PRN8555
Site or location nameStranding of Lord Airedale
Summary
DescriptionSite of the stranding of the minesweeper Lord Airedale, which was a Grimsby trawler. The Lord Airedale went ashore in a storm on the night of 18 March 1915. All 12 crew were lost. A rescue was attempted using the RNLI lifeboat George and Jane Walker from Bridlington, launched from the beach just to the north of the minesweeper. In the terrible conditions the lifeboats' horse drawn carriage became stuck in the surf; one man - Robert Carr - and two horses were lost. The horses were later buried near the cliff. A letter from the secretary of the RNLI read at the inquest said of Robert Carr 'he has been 'killed in action' in as true a sense as any of the brave men who have lost their lives on the field of battle or on the high seas fighting in the cause of our country.’ The Lord Airedale was subsequently recovered and returned to service and was sunk by a mine off Harwich with the loss of seven men on 29 November 1916.
