SummaryThe Somme Barracks
DescriptionGlossop Road Barracks, now known as the Somme Barracks. The barracks opened in 7 December 1907 as the Headquarters, Barracks and Drill Hall of the 1st West York Royal Engineers (Volunteers). The complex featured offices, an armoury, a workshop, surgery, and canteen. During the First World War the 1st West Yorkshire Royal Engineers (Volunteers) became the 1st West Riding Divisional Royal Engineers (Territorials) and saw action during the Battle of the Somme in 1916. The barracks was renamed to commemorate this action. The building is located on Glossop Road, on the corner of Gell Street. The building is still in use as an Army Reserve and Officer Training Corps centre. Comment- Glossop Road Barracks was also used to accommodate new recruits for the Sheffield Pals Battalion during late 1914, prior to their move to Redmires Camp.
