Full Record - The Greyhound PH (PRN: 8805)

PRN8805
Site or location nameThe Greyhound PH
Summary
DescriptionOne of the four public houses and an off licence neighbouring the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield Lock that were compulsorily puchased by the Liquor Control Board in 1916. Catering facilities within the factory proved inadequate for the massive increase in worker numbers in 1915 and the pubs became overcrowded at break times. The Greyhound was remodelled and re-opened in November 1916 to provide a large canteen capable of serving a thousand meals per day. This would be followed in June 1917 by a 600 seat restaurant at the nearby Royal Small Arms Tavern capable of serving three thousand meals per day. The Greyhound was privatised in 1923 passing into the hands of Hertford brewers McMullens who still own the pub.
